History of the Makanda Foundation
The Makanda Foundation was founded in 2019 by Phelix Joel, whose journey from hardship to empowerment inspired the organization. Following the 2007 Post Election Violence in Kenya, Phelix became a street child in Kisii, facing numerous challenges until a kind stranger rescued him.
After being rescued, Phelix completed his Standard 8 in 2011 and enrolled at St. Joseph’s School Rapogi. However, he had to leave during Form 3 due to ongoing difficulties. Undeterred, he later joined Friend’s School Bware, where he successfully completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Phelix’s determination led him to Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, where he graduated in 2019 with a degree in Criminology. His experiences overcoming adversity, including the hunger he faced while living on the streets and the necessity of selling padlocks to fund his education, fueled his desire to support others.
Inspired by his journey, Phelix established the Makanda Foundation immediately after graduation. The foundation was born out of a commitment to uplift underprivileged communities and address their most pressing needs. His five core programs were directly influenced by his past experiences:
- Education: Driven by the lack of educational opportunities he faced on the streets.
- Feeding the Poor: Motivated by the hunger he endured during his time living in the streets.
- Boosting the Economy: Reflecting on his experiences of selling padlocks to partially fund his education.
- Support for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs): Inspired by the stranger who rescued him and the importance of inclusivity.
- Environmental Conservation: Acknowledging that the environment was where he found shelter while living on the streets.
From the outset, the foundation emphasized building strong partnerships with local organizations, community leaders, and volunteers to enhance its impact. Initial initiatives included providing scholarships for students, organizing food drives, and launching vocational training programs, establishing a comprehensive approach to community development.
As the foundation grew, it expanded its reach and introduced new programs to meet the evolving needs of the communities it served. The Makanda Foundation quickly gained recognition for its effective initiatives and commitment to inclusivity, particularly in advocating for the rights and needs of persons with disabilities.
Over the years, the foundation has achieved significant milestones, such as helping thousands of children gain access to education, providing food assistance to families, and equipping individuals with skills for better job opportunities. Through continuous evaluation and community feedback, the Makanda Foundation adapts and innovates its programs to ensure they remain relevant and impactful.
Today, the Makanda Foundation stands as a symbol of hope, promoting a culture of empowerment and resilience in the communities it serves, while remaining dedicated to creating a brighter future for all.
